Osmanieh Battleship of the Ottoman Empire launched 2nd September 1864was built in Britain on the Clyde, the ship was laid up in 1904 to berearmed with German 210mm Krupp gun in the forward barbette and a 150mmKrupp gun in the aft. The ship was stricken in 1913 and eventuallybroken up after the war. Asimilar fate for her three sister shipsAzzizieh, Mahmoudieh and Orkanieh.

Osmanieh

On board the Turkish battleship Osmanieh. The Osmanieh with her threesister ships Azzizieh, Mahmoudieh and Orkanieh were built on the Clydeor Thames during the 1860s and displaced 6,400 tons. The photographshows the Osmanieh with captain Faik Bey standing by the companion,with the second in command further behind, while the men are at theirquarters under the orders of the lieutenants working the guns,maintaining the barbette and climbing up the shrouds. Her upper workshave been cut down fore and aft, thus making a citadel for thesecondary armament, while barbettes were built at either end, each fora 9.4 in Krupp breech-loader.
Mahmudieh

Assari Tevfik Class Assar- i- Tevfik was originally and Egyptian ship by was taken over bythe Ottoman Empire to serve with the Turkish Navy. She was at one timethe flagship of Vice-Admiral Arif Hikmet Pasha. She took part in theDardanelles operation on 18th January 1913 and was damaged by gun fireand later received more damage from Bulgarian guns and eventuallybecame a wreck on 25th January 1913.

Seamen of the Assar-i-Tevfik at cutlass drill. The Assari-Tevfik was alarger ship than the Shevket class with a displacement of 4,687 tonsand was more heavily armed with ten Krupp guns of 9.4 in and 8.2 in. In1897 she was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Arif Hikmet Pasha, whosebrother, Captain Ghalib Bey was naval attaché in England. Physicaldrills and drills with side arms formed a large part of the practicaltraining on all warships at this time.
Assari Shevket Class Ottoman Empire battleships Assari Shevket and Nedjimi Shevket werelaunched in 1868. Only Nedjimi Shevket saw service during the firstworld war, Assari was broken up in 1910, and afterwards served as adepot ship before being broken up after 1929.

Thepicture shows the stern of the ship as the men are being exercised withthe commander standing in the foreground. A bugler has blown the'still' at which all crew cease work and stand ready for the nextcommand.
Messudieh ClassTurkish battleship Messudiyeh of the Ottoman Navy. She was sunk by a British submarine (B11) off the coast of the Dardanelles.

The captain of the Messoudieh in 1897 was Mehemet Bey who servedbriefly as a Naval attaché in England. The officer on the left was thefirst lieutenant of the vessel, next are her first engineer and doctor,with other engineers. The officers behind are mostly lieutenants. Itwas said at the time that the engineering branch of the Turkish Navywas probably the weakest part of the navy.
Hamidieh ClassHamidieh a battleship of the Turkish Navy was launched in January 1885at Constantinople. Originally called Nusretiye she was renamed in 1881.Hamidieh was scrapped in 1910 before the war started and so neverreally saw any action.

ul Hamid 25th September 1903 Renamed Hamidieh after the revolution in1908. Torpedoed by a Bulgarian torpedo boat near Varna on 21st November1912, but managed to limp to Constantinople. Took part in thebombardment at Odessa on 29th October 1914 and became a training shipfrom 1914-1918. Stricken in 1948 and broken up for scrap.



Abdul Mecid Classul Mecid (Medjidieh) 25th July 1903 Renamed Medjidieh in 1903. Minedoff Odessa after taking part in the bombardment and sank. Salvaged bythe Russians and commissioned as Prut on 29th October. Captured by theGermans at Sevastopol then returned to Turkey on 12th May 1918.Underwent a major refit in 1927. Stricken in 1948 and broken up forscrap.
